I’ve pictured this river journey as happening in three phases: the first phase was the human-powered journey down the river, having adventures on the river and near it, meeting people, camping in parks, reading in libraries, visiting churches, and writing and posting as I went. Starting in January, the second phase has begun. I’ve settled in at a series of artist colonies and am writing music in response to this whole amazing journey. I’m at Montalvo in California from January through March, at the Hermitage in Florida in April, and at Ucross in Wyoming in May, and then spending the summer up on my land in Vermont. Next year, I imagine beginning phase three: revisiting the places and people I met on the first journey, performing the music I have made for and hopefully with them, doing residencies that enlist townspeople as fellow performers.

I need your support to realize the total vision for the project, so I’ve set up this tiered list of possible contribution levels. I’ve never done anything like this before, so it’s an exciting experiment for me, and I really hope you will want to participate, at whatever level is meaningful for you. If every person who has visited this Riverblog were to sign up to pre-order the mp3s, I could live for the whole writing period without worrying about bills. If enough of you donate at higher levels, I will be able to do residencies and give free concerts in towns that can’t afford to hire me to play.

    To Whom It May Concern,
We are a research team from Indiana University at Bloomington. The primary investigator of this team is Dr. Curtis J. Bonk. Dr. Bonk is a professor in the Department of Instructional Systems Technology at IU.
We are a research group at Indiana University (IU) led by Professor Curtis J. Bonk, from the Instructional Systems Technology Department at IU.
Dr. Bonk is author of the recent book, “The World is Open: How Web Technology is Revolutionizing Education” as well as several other books and hundreds of academic papers and research articles.
As a follow-up to his previous book project, our research group is presently engaged in a research project on “Extreme Learning.”
Briefly stated, extreme learning relates to how people learn or teach with the help of technology in non-traditional or informal ways. This area includes language learning, virtual learning, adventure learning, and global education.
With IRB approval, we are in the process of collecting stories of people who are engaged in adventure learning and environmental education. In particular, we are interested in capturing stories wherein such types of learning have significantly impacted or changed someone’s life. Such stories might offer inspiration to other people. Your Web tools and programs have been extremely successful in facilitating learning for a large number of people. We are fairly certain that some of these individuals have unique stories and learning experiences to share. We wonder if you can nominate some of those learners so that we can contact them and interview them via email them for their learning stories.
If you would like to contribute to this research, please reply to this email at your earliest convenience. Your help is greatly appreciated. If you are interested, we will share our research findings with you for your reference. By the way, if you would you like to contact Professor Bonk directly and ask him questions about this project or his books, his email is cjbonk@indiana.edu and curt@worldisopen.com.
    Hoping for a favorable response.
    Thank you,
The Extreme Learning Team at Indiana University
