Interesting to hear the perspective of a first time person to Baptist church as I grew up around it. A part of me wishes I could be so trusting and know things with such certainty. Another part of me is a little angry that well-meaning people turned my children totally off Christianity. I am too questioning a person to ever have such certainty.

I probably would share your reaction, but on the other hand, it's possible that this sureness is considered rather the sureness of faith in God's goodness and love for you. The sureness part is bothersome if it means nobody ever thinks they need self-knowledge or growth (via repentance). But there we get into differing notions of what it is to be saved; in the East, for example, that's a lifetime process

Excellent post for Yom Kippur, when so many are pondering atonement and forgiveness.

Although I don't comment on every post, I want to: I'm loving your description of this journey. It's inspiring me to attempt a more contemplative life, even in the stream of the everyday chores and routines. Thank you!
